Space Based Horror Flicks

This is a quick overview of some space based horror movies that are definitely worth checking out. This wont include sci-fi movies based on earth, its mostly a hand picking of my favourite off world set stories with a high horror content or suspense. These movies aren't that recent and a spoiler warning doesn't seems worthwhile but the pictures and notes do give the plot away but highlights why I recommend their viewing.

Alien (1979)

An obvious item for the list but it really set the benchmark for space based horror, it had many things that offered a fearful feast for the eyes from the industrial and sanitary claustrophobia of the human ship Nostromo, to the dark and misty bio mechanical alien ship. Best remembered for the dramatic face hugger and chest buster scenes yet its build up of atmosphere and tension is solid and pays off well with these scenes and the killing off of the crew by the xenomorph as well as the chilling revelation of Ash as a psychotic android letting the crew know of their extendability and hopelessness of surviving the alien.

 Forbidden Planet (1956)

Perhaps not strictly a horror movie but one that still held a nightmarish memory in my mind. Starring a young Leslie Nielsen as captain of a human United Planets Cruiser C75-D in search of a lost expedition to the planet, where they are greeted by Robby the Robot and his master/creator Dr. Morbius, almost a mix of scientist and sorcerer endowed with the advance knowledge of an ancient alien device. The Landed Earth Crew face a series of mysterious attacks, and are then under siege from a terrifying invisible and unstoppable monster, as tensions rise between the crew, the doctor and his daughter it is revealed that the phantom beast is actually an evil manifestation of Mobius' subconscious mind that he fails to control.

Sunshine (2007)

Earth's last hope, the Icarus II  and her crew are the second attempt to carry a colossal payload to reignite the dying sun after the failure of the first attempt, with critical damage and loss of oxygen production, there is a real sense of survival, desperation and almost cabin fever tension amidst the ship's personnel. However the real horror only begins to emerge with eerie discovery of Icarus I complete with subliminal flashes of images of the dead crew and the discovery of an unknown intruder, the deformed and insane captain of Icarus I.

2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)

Stanley Kubrick's science fiction classic, not a horror in the strictest sense yet with the feeling of space isolation, the cold words of a killer computer and the continually appearance of the ominous and almost occult symbolic black monolith it had to be included. It features a series of acts on the origin of man and a mysterious monolith discovered on the moon, on board the Discovery One en route to Jupiter where the creepy Hal 9000, the ships computer begins to kill its crew, this part has its own horror plot within yet the whole movie coveys a mysterious and foreboding unknown of man's origins, advancement and rebirth, a mysterious and epic vision that is both deeply fascinating and admittedly frightening.

Event Horizon (1997)

Laurence Fishburne and the crew of the Louis and Clark are sent to answer a distress call of the Event Horizon, a ship that mysteriously disappeared 7 years ago, they are accompanied by its designer played by Sam Neill with knowledge of its experimental 'black hole' gravity drive. They discover evidence of a massacre and are troubled by the reactivation of the gravity drive and the nightmarish visions they face. After a series of deaths the true horrific effects of the experimental drive are revealed as opening a gateway to a dark dimension of chaos and evil, to hell. Its designer, Dr. Weir becomes corrupted by the dark forces and seeks to foils the crews plan of escaping and destroying the Event Horizon lest it reach Earth.

Prometheus (2012)

Set in a time line before the Alien Movie, The spaceship Prometheus and her crew travel to a planet believed to be significant in relation to a theory of the Alien seeding of Human life on Earth or a type of Xeno Genesis. The planet is baron with only a dark and creepy alien structure remaining of this seemingly abandoned planet, with only a decapitated alien engineer and mysterious black liquid providing more questions than answers. The black liquid proves a hostile mutagen that transforms certain crew members and leaves Shaw, the female protagonist pregnant with alien. With the unknown schemes of David the android, mutant attacks, the human hating Engineer awakened and a horrific alien abortion, this movie is puzzling, disturbing and yet exciting at the same time.

Doom (2005)

I'll admit, more of action based movie but I feel like it was a worthy attempt at portraying the game on the big screen with decent frights and horror suspense. What I really like about it was the real special effects with the monsters/genetic demon outfits with the Imp and Hell Knight and the bad-ass BFG 9000 included. The mars based colony and special tactical team is a good set up, reminiscent of aliens/predator although a tad predictable, yet interesting plot points involving the ark teleporter gate and the discover of a 24th martian chromosome that made you superhuman or a demon, it worked for me, its got scares and is a fun watch even if your not a fan of the game.

Screamers (1995)

A former mining colony known as Sirius 6B now a scarred wasteland from Civil War, a war which commander Joe Hendricksson is seeking to bring to an end with a recent invitation to negotiate peace, although cautious of this invite he makes the journey to talk a truce. He must also beware of screamers, known as Autonomous Mobile Swords (AMS), remnants of war, like scattered mines except these move and hunt the living and as Hendricksson discovers they are adapting/upgrading. To their horror it is revealed that screamers impersonating humans, even children, in order to infiltrate secure bases. As he is pursued by these creepy killing machines, it is hard to know who to trust and who is human.

Pitch Black (2000)

The premise of this was pretty good, Ship crash lands on planet with a 'ghost colony' seemingly abandoned by its former residents and with high tensions and rivalries between the survivors notable the fugitive Riddick and his captor bounty hunter. All is not what it seems, something monstrous lurks in the shadows and it isn't the night visioned Riddick, soon they discover that the sun will soon set for a long time and when it does it will be feeding time for the nocturnal flying alien swarms. I feel like somewhere in the middle or towards the end, the movie falls slightly flat perhaps as the monsters are finally exposed and fought, however it still holds interest to see how the group attempts to survive this relentless night swarm along with limited light sources, dragging escape ship supplies and if they can actual trust one another.

That's the list! Others to mention Alien 3 and Resurrection and Ghosts of Mars weren't that great or scary in my opinion but are worth a watch nonetheless, I feel Aliens is more of a action movie than a sci-fi horror compared to it predecessor, and I haven't yet seen Pandorum yet but may do a review when I get the chance, again these are space based, its only off world base Horror Sci-Fi.
Let me know what you think, what I miss and if these movies are worth watching in your opinion, I'll be posting this on both my Horror and Sci-Fi Blogs together. I want to hear from any readers that know of any upcoming Sci-Fi Horror Movies that will be worth keeping an eye out for, In the meantime take a look up at the stars and be grateful your not up there with this guy...

Dodging Celestial Extinction (Again)

Tonight March 5th, marks the near earth passing of an enormous asteroid known as 2014 DX110 around 21:00 (GMT). With the approximate size of 3 double Decker buses or roughly 20-40 meters in diameter, the near Earth object will travel at a super speed of 33,000mph and a distance of 217,000 miles away at its closest from Earth, that's 9/10th of the distance to the Moon according to Lindley Johnson with NASA's Planetary Science Division in Washington D.C.

(The orbital path and position of Apollo NEO asteroid 2014 DX110 just a week prior to discovery. Credit- Created using NASA/JPL’s Solar System Dynamics Small-Body Database Browser)

Astronomers, Scientists and Researchers are confident that this near earth object is no threat to the Earth, a good thing considering its size, its nothing Bruce Willis need concern over as Nasa's numbers show a very, very slim chance of impact as shown here: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/2014dx110.html

The event can be viewed with a pretty good telescope but its unlikely to be seen by simply looking skyward. It can also be viewed  live online with the Virtual Telescope or by visiting Slooh Events the webcast of the event is expected to go live at 20:30 (GMT) with commentary. Other times: (16:07 EST) or Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 8 am (AEDT) etc.

Despite this NEO (Near Earth Object) event turning out not to be the makings of a disaster movie like 'Armageddon' or 'Deep Impact', the possibility and frequency of such impacting asteroids are something of a scary reality. Recent recognised NEOs include the asteroid dubbed 2012 DA14 followed by an unpredicted explosion of the Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over Russia last year as seen in this RT VIDEO.

This meteor Injured more than 1,000 people with massive damage to buildings and infrastructure and was seen as a big event going viral, yet should such space rock impacts or NEO events been seen as a dangerous rarity? As Lindley Johnson states "In the last year, 21 small asteroids ranging in size from 1 to 30 meters have come closer to Earth than this," he said. "The close approach of 2014 DX110 is really a non-event in our eyes." Historically the Earth has been impacted from such space rocks before, as the surface of the Earth shows where it is well preserved, such as the Barringer Crater in Arizona (USA), that according to Universe Today isn't all that big for an impact crater.

So with the 'safe' passing by of 2014 DX110 tonight (GMT), tune in to watch the event live but know that such NEO events aren't uncommon and that those Sci-fi meteor disaster movies (corny as they are) may not be so far fetched as to what is possible in the future. In the mean time, keep watching the skies.

Will you be watching the NEO event of 2014 DX110? What do think a meteor disaster scenario would be like? Are Humans ready for one? Comment below and follow for more.

Real Interesting Real Space Images

Sometimes Science Reality is stranger than Science Fiction. The wonder and fascination associated with sci-fi stories can stem largely from the actually awe and astonishment experienced when taking in, observing and understanding the reality we live in and often the reality is more wild, strange and beautifully colossal than we can grasp. Such is the deep beyonds of space to which we are only began to really see in the last few decades. These are a list of just 15 of the amazing actual images from the Hubble Telescope, numbered in no particular order as they all offer a feast to the eyes, mind and imagination.

1. The Hour Glass Nebula
The eye of the Universe? Somewhat reminiscent to a kind of religious icon or an occult symbol of cosmic magic it holds a striking awe and wonder about it. The image is of MyCn18, a young planetary nebula located about 8,000 light-years away, for more information and accreditation follow the link to the ESA/Hubble site.

2. The Cosmic Caterpillar
Munching away on a galactic leaf 4500 light-years away in the constellation of Cygnus, well not exactly. This is a proto-star gathering gas and material to it and as far as star evolution goes could be consider a larva but what gives it its appearance is nearby super bright stars of Cygnus OB2  blasting it with ultraviolet radiation.

3. The Cartwheel Galaxy
500 million light-years away in the constellation of Sculptor, the result of a violent galactic collision with the shockwave ripples caused of a smaller galaxy passing right through it. Planetary bound meteors or other earth disaster stories seem minuscule if you imagine the entire Milky Way colliding with another galaxy.

4.The Cat's Eye Nebula
Like a glowing cell creature from the depths of the sea, or also described to be the likeness of the Eye of Sauron from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, the Cat's Eye Nebula was the first planetary nebula ever to be discovered and is one of the most complex.

5. The Black Eye Galaxy
Also nicknamed the Evil Eye Galaxy, kind of creepy, but at least it's roughly 17 million light-years from Earth. Known to astronomers as M64, the outcome of a collision of two galaxies that left a merged star system with an unusual appearance as well as bizarre internal motions, this galaxy has the scars of a violent history.

6. Journey to the Centre of the Galaxy
Yellow represents the near-infrared, Red represents the infrared, Blue and violet represent the X-ray. Three views were brought together to provide a composite image of one of the most detailed views ever of our galaxy's mysterious core.

7. A Cradle of Chaos
This is the painting like beauty of Messier 8, also known as the lagoon nebula, lies in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer). This enormous cloud of glowing interstellar gas is a stellar nursery chaotically sculpt and colourfully illuminated by massive stars at its heart that also give off huge amounts of ultraviolet radiation.

8. Expanding Cosmic Bubble
An expanding shell of glowing gas surrounding a hot, massive star within the Milky Way, this shell is being shaped by strong stellar winds of material and radiation produced by the huge bright star to left. It reminds me of shield you might see in sci-fi movies, maybe a protector from fiery solar flares.

9. The Hatching Star
Like the hatching of life from an egg, or the budding of a flower, a star eruption that dramatically demonstrates the echoing of light through space caused by an unusual stellar outburst in January 2002, other sequences are available, this is part three of four images of the event.

10. The Star Reaching 'Mystic Mountain'
Likened to a craggy Mountain of fantasy tales, the dramatic a pillar of gas and dust stands three light-years tall, which is being eaten away by nearby bright stars and those hidden within, forging its unusual shape. Lying within the Carina Nebula it is bombarded by Scorching radiation and fast charged particle winds.

11. The Womb of the Universe
Nebulas are where stars are born, this nebula is ionised by its youngest and heaviest blue stars. This star cluster Pismis 24, lies in the core of the large emission nebula NGC 6357 that extends one degree on the sky in the direction of the Scorpius constellation, about 8,000 light-years away from Earth.

12. The Pillars of Creation
Like a cosmic canyon made up of cool interstellar hydrogen gas and dust that acting as incubators for new stars. This space 'landscape' seems like it could on a mysterious planets surface, the clouds and strange shapes remind me of how you can look at clouds in earth's sky and see various imagined images.

13. The Horsehead Nebula
At first glance it seems like a huge figure or creature amongst the stars like an ethereal cosmic god striding across the nebula yet this real image is fantastic enough without the need for imagination. Its lies in the Orion constellation rising gas clouds from  Horsehead Nebula, otherwise known as Barnard 33.
Original Image and Site

14. Orion's Sunset glow
In the mythical star constellation of Orion (The Hunter) lies the magnificent reflection nebula NGC 2023, nearly 1500 light-years from Earth. NGC2023’s B-type star illuminates the nebula giving it surface brightness good for astronomers to study it, ancient astronomers often looked towards Orion but never imagined this.

15. A Whirlpool to the Beyond
The face-on view of the spiral galaxy M51, dubbed the Whirlpool Galaxy. Its red starry spirals  remind me of blood filled veins supplying an organ or a crimson coloured ivy wrapping itself around a curved ornament. The Whirlpool name seems fitting as it appears like a spiralling portal into the unknown realms of beyond.

That's it, of course there are loads more I didn't get to, check out ESA/Hubble's site link below for more.

What are your favourite images? do you see something within the cosmic clouds? or do the star bursts and spiral galaxies remind you of something symbolic? Such images can inspire vivid thoughts of cosmic mysticism and magic or unleash dreams of exploring the stars, even to have looked upon them in our time is a thing of awe and wonder. 8 upcoming Sci-Fi movies of 2014 (& Trailers)

With February nearly done, the Sci-Fi movie year of 2014 is off to a rapid start with the likes of Robocop and I, Frankenstein but with more and more trailers being realeased to wet appetites, here's a round up of some of the upcoming movies I'm looking forward to see. I listed them chronologically by there realease date month with trailer links. By the way, the trailers are already out but consider this your Spoiler Alert!

1. Jodorowksy's Dune  (March 2014)
As an Artist and a Dune fan this will be really intriguing. Its a documentary on director Alejandro Jodorowsky remarkable vision to make a movie of Frank Herbert's book 'Dune', his movie version was never made but with this maybe his vision of it will live on to inspire more 'out there' thinking.

2. Transcendence  (April 2014)
A fascinating and somewhat disturbing trans-human vision of the future or a dream for futurists like Ray Kurzweil. A groundbreaking tech scientist is fatally wounded by modern Luddites and uploads his consciousness into the computer becoming 'transcendent' into the electronic realm. For good or for ill? it raises questions about if you can keep your humanity when absorbed in technology. Who knows?

3. Godzilla  (May 2014)
To be honest I was not sold on this idea originally...but then I seen the trailer: its Breaking Bad meets Jurassic Park!! Well...not exactly, but an epic monster movie staring Bryan Cranston and Ken Wantanabe has got my thumbs up and gives it more credit than some of these military versus something, something movie. Very cool trailer sound too (Sounds like something from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey).

4. X-men: Days of Future Past  (May 2014)
An epic trailer for an epic story and the music (Adagio in D Minor by John Murphy) really makes it. I wont explain too much as Ive not read up enough on the comic. In this movie, Wolverine is sent back in time from a dark future to change the doomed destiny of both human and mutant. I spotted what looks like Bishop in the trailer and theres other characters I'm interested in seeing (Cable and Apocalypse), looking forward to Peter Dinklage's performance and slightly concerned over the look of QuickSilver and the Sentinels.
Trailer Link: Trailer Link 4

5. Edge of Tomorrow  (June2014)
Liking the plot of this and checking out what its based on : the Japanese light novel 'All you need is kill' by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. An undefeatable alien invasion hits the earth and an inexperienced Tom Cruise fights and dies in an unwinnable battle but wakes up to relive and repeat it in a time loop, think of it as groundhog day meets independence day, not the best marketing slogan but I hope its cool.

6. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes  (July 2014)
Hail Caesar! This looks really gripping and interesting, being a fan of the original Planet of the Apes movie and although knowing that outcome the journey to it still remains utterly fascinating. It is set in the aftermath of the simian virus and several crippling wars, mankind is weakened while their ape enemies grow in strength.
Trailer Link: Trailer Link 6

7. Jupiter Ascending  (July 2014)
An Epic looking movie from the Wachowskis Siblings. After toilet cleaning janitor 'Jupiter' (Mila Kunis), is targeted for assassination by the rulers of the Universe, her would-be assassin (Channing Tatum) turns out to be her saviour. She learns of her special birth and DNA under a specific star alignment event and why she is a threat to those in power. This looks like a great fantasy sci-fi tale, could be the next 'Fifth Element' for me.
Trailer Link: Trailer Link 7

8. Guardians of the Galaxy  (August 2014)
This looks like good fun. I am somewhat familiar with aspects of Marvel universe characters from the likes of Nova, Ronan and the Annihilation series. This movies focuses on a misfit team of fugitive anti-heroes called the Guardians of the Galaxy consisting of Peter Quill (StarLord), Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket and the deadly Gamora who must band together against their pursuers. I like how the tone isn't taking itself so seriously, as marvel have a lot of epic and kind of serious movies this year its a well timed bit of comic relief.

Did you agree with my list? Were my comments way off? Keeping things light and opinionated are good for the Sci-FI Blue Sky Blog but if you can fill in some more details, interesting facts or counter opinions please comment below. I want to hear your opinions and what Sci-Fi Movies you are looking forward to in 2014? I will  be updating more on upcoming movies titles as the year goes on, that's the line up folks as you can see there's lots to forward to!

Welcome to Sci-Fi Blue Sky!

Its in the name, its a blog about science fiction in a kind of blue sky thinking way, or to put it more cohesively this blog is all about the realms of science fiction in popular media, books, movies, games and more but also about  the realties of science fiction in new ideas, emerging technologies and science, future predictions and discussions all mixed in with my own spin, runaway thoughts, concepts and illustrations.

I am a fan of science fiction but by no means an expert, therefore this blog will be aim to be open minded and as light as zero gravity and not weighed down by the minute details. The finer aspects of sci-fi fanlore and facts would be appreciated in the comments section to share and discuss, if truth be told, this blog is more about my own learning and being exposed to new ideas, sharing and discussing within the context of Science Fiction.

Ideas affect  us all, now more than ever in the information age: long and not so long ago, it was myth and superstition that shaped our thinking and world, more recently Science and academia has become the new torchbearer for the story of human origin and perhaps human destiny, yet without imagination and vision would such technological innovation and social gains exist? Is Science Fiction the new myth of our time? Think about how many people believed (even a little) in the magic of the force when they first seen Star Wars, or 'woke up' when they seen the Matrix?or even now how many people hold a communicator device in their hand previously a fictional prop of the original Star Trek series?

Its not so hard to grasp that such ideas shape our world and thinking, I like to think of science ficition as a mental forge of mankinds future.

So follow the blog to stay tuned for more, i'll be looking to post up my own artwork and promote other artists- mainly illustrations or concept art to tie in with the topic theme with links to their site. Source material, Video and article links will also be added under each topic for further information.
